Fit and healthy family half-term fun is heading to Sunderland.
On 21st February an indoor sports festival will take place in the Beacon of Light – the building next to Sunderland Aquatic Centre and opposite the Stadium of Light.
From 12.00 pm to 3.00 pm, the Beacon of Light will host the BIG Indoor Sports Festival – which will be the first event in the Active Sunderland BIG Events and Community Sports Festival programme for 2019.
The event on the 21st at the Beacon of Light will cost just £2 per person and feature a wide range of fun sports and activities that you and your family can take part in.
Participants will have the opportunity to enjoy:
- Table tennis
- Big-feet football
- An inflatable speed cage and dartboard
- Urban golf
- Dodgeball
- Basketball
- Swing ball
- Dance
- Hockey
The BIG Indoor Sports Festival will also see the debut of the new Active Sunderland lion mascot. The lion – due to be given its name in an online poll – will be leading the fun throughout the day.
Sunderland City Council’s cabinet member for communities and culture, Cllr John Kelly, said, “The Beacon of Light adds to our network of first-class sport and leisure venues across the city, providing people of all ages and abilities with easy, affordable access to a range of leisure and fitness activities.”
“This is a fantastic new venue for the indoor sports festival and I hope everyone will come along and enjoy the activities at the first Active Sunderland event of 2019.”
“There’s no need to pre-book for this event – just turn up on the day and register. We are expecting the half-term sports festival to be hugely popular, with a lot of families taking part in a wide range of fun activities.”
Other events coming up in 2019 include the BIG 3K Run, the BIG Bike Ride, BIG Walk and more.

- 30th June, Active Sunderland BIG Walk
- 24th July to 21st August, Active Sunderland BIG Community Sports Festivals (to be held every Wednesday during the summer holidays)
- 28th August, Active Sunderland BIG Summer Festival
