Sunderland City Council is recognising residents who have gone above and beyond throughout the Covid-19 pandemic with a brand-new community awards ceremony.

The Sunderland Shining Stars Awards will celebrate those who have contributed to the community and Sunderland throughout 2020/21.

There will be several categories for residents and businesses to nominate individuals, community groups and organisations who have helped in their community.

Award Categories will include Organisation of the Year, Outstanding contribution to the community (over 18), Young person’s outstanding contribution to the community (under 18), Sunderland’s most Neighbourly Neighbour, Best Use of Digital Technology for Communication, Community group that has supported residents’ Mental health and wellbeing, and Community Fundraising Champion.

There will be a winner in each category from all 5 areas of the city, with up to two highly commended runners up announced. These will then go on to represent their areas in the City Final Awards Ceremony later in the year at the Stadium of Light.

The nominees will be judged by a panel including Area Ward Members.

Nominations will close on Sunday 20 June, with the City Final Awards ceremony taking place on Thursday 30 September at the Stadium of Light.

Cllr Linda Williams, Portfolio Holder for Vibrant City, said: “Throughout such an unprecedented year, so many of our residents have gone above and beyond within our communities. From individuals to our Voluntary Community Sector groups, the best of our city has shone throughout this pandemic, and these people deserve a great amount of recognition.

“I am delighted in the announcement of the Sunderland Shining Stars Awards and can’t wait to hear of all the amazing work that has taken place throughout the Covid-19 pandemic.”

“I would also like to thank everyone who has volunteered to help our communities and our vulnerable residents. I encourage anyone who would like to help more within the city to get involved and sign up to Sunderland City Council’s volunteering platform.”
