Residents have until the end of this week to nominate the Shining Stars within their communities as the deadline is extended.
Sunderland City Council announced the new Sunderland Shining Stars awards, which will recognise residents who have gone above and beyond throughout the Covid-19 pandemic by contributing to the community.
Residents originally had until Sunday 20 June to nominate, however that has now been extended until midday on Friday 2 July.
There are several categories for residents and businesses to nominate individuals, community groups and organisations who have helped in their community.
Award Categories will include Organisation of the Year, Outstanding contribution to the community (over 18), Young person’s outstanding contribution to the community (under 18), Sunderland’s most Neighbourly Neighbour, Best Use of Digital Technology for Communication, Community group that has supported residents’ Mental health and wellbeing, and Community Fundraising Champion.
There will be a winner in each category from all 5 areas of the city, with up to two highly commended runners up announced. The nominees will be judged by a panel including Area Ward Members, and the winners will then go on to represent their areas in the City Final Awards Ceremony on Thursday 30 September at the Stadium of Light.
Cllr Linda Williams, Portfolio Holder for Vibrant City, said: “It is fantastic news that our residents have another week to nominate the people who have helped in their communities over this unprecedented year. So many people have gone above and beyond within our communities and they deserve to be recognised.
“The Sunderland Shining Stars Awards will be a great night celebrating all the amazing work that has taken place throughout the Covid-19 pandemic. It will also highlight how important volunteering is within our city. I encourage anyone who would like to help more within the city to get involved and sign up to Sunderland City Council’s volunteering platform.”
