Sunderland will take centre stage this December with an extraordinary effort to enter the Guinness World Records.

Organised by the Sunderland Music, Arts and Culture Trust and Sunderland Music City, almost 200 pianists of all ages and abilities will be invited to perform consecutively for over 11 hours in a single, record-breaking piano relay.

The event – dubbed Keys of the City – will take place from 8am to 7pm on Sunday 7 December 2025 at The Fire Station and aims to break the current world record of 169 pianists, set in Hong Kong earlier this year.

The challenge will see performers take to the keys one after another, each playing a short piece of music lasting between three and five minutes before passing to the next participant, creating a continuous relay of music and community spirit.

Local businesses and organisations can sponsor the event, with all proceeds going to Love, Amelia, a charity supporting families living in poverty in Sunderland and the wider region.

Sponsor packages range from £50 at supporter level to £1,000 in headline sponsorship, with benefits including on-site branding, media recognition, and association with an official Guinness World Record attempt.

Michelle Daurat, CEO of the Sunderland Music Arts and Culture Trust and Sunderland Music City, said:

“Sunderland is a proud Music City and this event is about using music to unite our city, to show the power of creativity, and to help children who most need our support.

Keys of the City is open to everyone, from beginners to concert pianists. We want schools, businesses and community groups to put forward a team, take part and help Sunderland make history.”
