People are being encouraged to turn out and give a warm Mackem welcome to BBC Radio 1’s Greg James as he arrives in Sunderland today on day six of his mammoth ‘Greg James’ Longest Ride’ challenge for Red Nose Day.

The adopted Mackem is expected to reach the day six finish line in Sunderland’s Keel Square at around 5pm on Tuesday 18 March, riding his trusty tandem ‘Tando Norris’.

Councillor Beth Jones, Sunderland City Council’s Cabinet Member for Communities, Culture and Tourism, said:

“We’re delighted that Greg is stopping off in Sunderland on his epic 1,000km Longest Ride challenge for Comic Relief.

“We already think of him as an adopted Mackem after he presented his breakfast show from Keel Square in January and we can’t wait to welcome him back to Sunderland, ahead of BBC Radio 1 Big Weekend in May.

“It really is a remarkable challenge, cycling all the way from Weymouth to Edinburgh in eight days, and it’s for such a good cause, raising funds for Comic Relief to fund the vital work they do in our communities to support people facing incredibly tough times.

“So, it would be fantastic to see people turning out in force to give Greg a warm Mackem welcome when he arrives in Keel Square tomorrow and to give generously to such a worthy cause, and then wave him off on the next leg of his mega journey when he sets off from Keel Square at 9 am on Thursday morning.”
