Together for Children (TfC), the children’s services partner of Sunderland City Council, is proud to support the first-ever National Supported Lodgings Week, running until Sunday 16 November.
This UK-wide initiative unites organisations to share best practice and highlight the life-changing impact of supported lodgings for young people aged 16 to 25 as they move towards independence.
Locally Sunderland’s Supported Lodging scheme provides safe and supportive homes where hosts – individuals or families – help young people who are often care-experienced or facing homelessness to develop essential life skills, build confidence and prepare for living independently.
As part of the national campaign, Sunderland has partnered with the charity Host the Future to raise awareness and encourage more people to consider becoming hosts.
The week started with an event in Parliament on Monday 10 November. Laura Mills, lead for Supported Lodgings in Sunderland, was joined by Lorna (a current host), and young people Paige and Jessica who have both lived in supported lodgings accommodation to meet MPs. They were also given the chance to answer questions about the scheme. The visit gave young people, hosts and professionals a chance to share their stories, discuss issues affecting them and demonstrate the positive impact of supported lodgings.

To support the campaign locally, TfC is hosting information stalls at:
- Raich Carter Everyone Active Café – Thursday 13 November, 10.30am –1.30pm
- Sunderland Aquatic Centre Café – Wednesday 19 November, 10.30am –1.30pm
In addition, Sunderland TFC will co-host a national online information session on Tuesday 18 November, aimed at recruiting new hosts and providing advice to those interested in learning more.
More information about the sessions can be found at: Supported Lodgings Info Sessions | National Supported Lodgings Week
Councillor Michael Butler, Portfolio Holder for Children’s Services, Child Poverty and Skills at Sunderland City Council, said:
“Supported Lodgings offer young people a safe and nurturing environment as they take steps toward independence. The impact of a caring host can be truly transformative.
“We’re proud to be part of this national campaign and to showcase the incredible work being done in Sunderland. I encourage anyone who’s curious about becoming a host to attend one of our events or explore the national website.”
Helen Monks, Director of Children’s Social Care at Together for Children, added:
“Supported Lodgings provide a vital bridge for young people who need stability, encouragement, and a safe place to grow.
“We’re incredibly proud of our hosts in Sunderland and the difference they make every day. This week is about celebrating their role and inviting others to consider joining this rewarding scheme.”
One of the young people who has lived in supported lodgings said:
“The people are really nice, they help me with what I need, I have my own room with everything in and I have zero worries about where I live, they help me with my benefits and to learn more independent skills.”
A new national website has been launched to help people find their local scheme and request more information: Homepage | National Supported Lodgings Week
