The leading teams and participants from the recent Beat the Street Hendon and Grangetown competition were recognised this week during a prize presentation ceremony held at the Raich Carter Centre.

The winning teams included representatives from Grangetown Primary School and Hudson Road Primary School. The winners were presented with trophies, along with vouchers for walking, cycling, running, scooting and wheeling the furthest. These awards recognised their achievements during the recent Beat the Street game, which took place across Hendon and Grangetown for six weeks in April and May this year. Additionally, prizes were awarded to the top-scoring individuals and community groups.

More than 980 people signed up and took part in the game and together clocked up an active travel mileage of 3,306 miles throughout the competition.

Awards at the Raich Carter Centre in Hendon Sunderland for the Beat The Street Walk Cycle or Wheel

Gerry Taylor, Executive Director for Public Health and Wellbeing at Sunderland City Council said:

“A massive congratulations to all the winners of Beat the Street! And well done to everyone else who got involved in getting more active.

“Building more movement into everyday activity is good for physical and mental health and Beat the Street shows how even small daily changes can make a big difference.

“For anyone keen to keep at it, there are lot of other easy to join and low-cost opportunities to get active across Sunderland.”

While Beat the Street Hendon and Grangetown has finished, there are still lots of opportunities to get active including regular walking football sessions at Raich Carter Sports Centre, a junior parkrun in Mowbray Park, free weekly Walk to Fitness, ParkPlay, and tennis opportunities in Barley Mow Park. Residents can also join in with weight management and healthy lifestyle sessions. These activities are easy to join, low-cost, and help people build healthy habits that last.
