To mark this year’s Mothering Sunday on 14 March, Sunderland BID has organised a competition which will see a group of mums each receives a special treat.

And now families are being encouraged to nominate the special woman in their life, with a view to her receiving one of the gorgeous gifts.

Prizes on offer include a colourful bottle candle holder from the furniture shop, Harrison and Brown and a bag and scarf from Bou-chique at Bridge Street.

Also on offer is a special bottle of Poetic License distillery’s Yorkshire Forager gin, along with a signed copy of The Yorkshire Forager book by a food expert, Alysia Vasey.

Sweetie Box at Pennywell Business Centre is donating a Mother’s Day box of sweets for one lucky mum while Grazziebox – which is available at – is giving one of its delicious grazing boxes full of treats.

Deli, The Fat Unicorn, which has also launched its own special Mother’s Day menu, has donated a three-course lunch for two, while afternoon tea for two is on offer, courtesy of Crumb On In.

Other foodie treats include a Mother’s Day treat box from Cake For Breakfast and the opportunity to get perfect brows, thanks to Beauty HQ which will be giving the winner an HD Brow treatment.

Coopertree Events and Balloons is giving one mum a personalised arrangement and all the winners will receive a card from Mackem Cards to give to their mum.

Anyone who wants to nominate their mum can do so via the BID’s Facebook page at and explain why their “mam is mint.”

Sharon Appleby, Head of Business Operations at Sunderland BID, praised local businesses for supporting the competition.

“We’re delighted to have had such a good response and this has also highlighted some of the fantastic, independent businesses we have in the city,” she said.

“Mother’s Day is going to be different again this year as people will have to celebrate at home but there are some fantastic treats up for grabs and even if people aren’t lucky enough to win, they can still support our local traders.”

She added: “and this is also a great opportunity to buy one of the Sunderland Gift Cards so that mums can go out and buy something they really want at their leisure when non-essential retail opens again.”

The competition will close on 10 March. Sunderland Gift Cards – which can be spent at more than 100 outlets across the city – are available at
