If you fancy getting active this spring, there’s still time to register for the Run Sunderland Festival on Sunday May 13th.

The festival’s main races will be the Siglion Sunderland City Half Marathon and the Siglion Sunderland 10K, but there will also be a gentler option in the Active Sunderland BIG 3K Fun Run.

People from across Wearside and beyond are being urged to pull on their trainers and take part in one of the races.

The races will all start from Keel Square, in Sunderland city centre. The first to get going will be the BIG 3K Fun Run, which is suitable for people of all ages and running abilities.

The Sunderland City 10K and Half Marathon races will both set off at 9.00 am. You can follow news about all the races on the hashtag #RunWithTheTide.

The founder of the Run Sunderland Festival, north east athletics hero Steve Cram, said, “Everything is shaping up well for a great day on May 13th.”

“Numbers are looking very good for both the Sunderland Siglion Half Marathon and 10 K, but there’s still time to #RunWithTheTide alongside thousands of others from the region.”

“Sunderland City Council and partners have lined up some fantastic events in the city this summer and we’re looking forward to firing the starting gun for all that in a few weeks.”

The Active Sunderland BIG 3K will use the same start and finish line as the half marathon and 10K and a part of the same city-centre closed-road course.

Victoria French, head of events at Sunderland City Council, said, “The Active Sunderland BIG 3K Run is a fantastic complementary event to all the other events being held the same day.”

“The BIG 3K Run offers everyone the opportunity to take part in a great weekend of running in the city.”

“It is designed to be suitable for people of all abilities, including children aged five years and over. Each year it is great to see more and more runners who started with the 3K move on to longer events.”

The BIG 3K Fun Run is part of the 2018 Active Sunderland BIG Events Programme. Other BIG events to look forward to are:

  • A BIG bike ride on Sunday 11th June, with a number of different routes starting and finishing at St Peter’s Riverside near the University of Sunderland.
  • A BIG walk on Sunday 1st October, with different routes starting and finishing at Herrington Country Park. Appropriate for all ages and abilities.

The entry fee for all the BIG events is just £10.00, with an Active Sunderland t-shirt and goody bag included in the price.
