A free weekly local run will be launched in Washington this Sunday (19th May).

Runners of all ages and abilities are welcome to take part in the runs, which will be held in Princess Anne Park on Sunday mornings.

The run – part of the Great Run Local programme – is organised by volunteers, who are supported by Active Sunderland, Everyone Active and the local Area Committee.

Participants will have the option of 2 KM or 5 KM routes. The runs are designed to be fun and sociable, but they still have a competitive edge for those who feel they need that added incentive.

The runs are family friendly and suitable for everyone from absolute beginners to experienced runners, with people encouraged to tackle the courses at their own pace.

The Washington Great Run Local is inspired by the more established Great Run Local event that has been taking place in Mowbray Park in Sunderland city centre.

The city centre run has proved popular with hundreds of people since it was launched in 2016.

Sunderland City Council’s executive director of neighbourhoods, Fiona Brown, said, “I hope people in Washington will come out to take part in this free run, which is a fantastic way for the community to socialise and become more active.”

“The run, located in the heart of Washington, is a great new addition to the existing community programme in the area, offering participants the chance to have fun and improve both their physical and mental health.”

If you’d like to take part in the Washington runs, you can meet the other participants at Washington Leisure Centre at 9.25 am on Sunday mornings.
