Sunderland’s massively popular Illuminations and Festival of Light are to return to the city this autumn.

As well as classic favourites, these events will see some glittering new features, giving returning visitors a whole new take on the proceedings.

The Festival of Light in Roker Park is set to run from Thursday October 18th to Sunday 18th November. The festival will take place every Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday evening during this period.

The only exception will be Sunday 11th November, when the festival will be closed. During the October half-term week, the festival will be on every night.

Cllr John Kelly, Sunderland City Council’s cabinet member for communities and culture, said, “Since the reintroduction of this event in 2012, we have seen that it really has a special place in the hearts of Sunderland’s residents and visitors from all over the region.”

“This year we have made sure that there will be plenty for visitors of all ages to enjoy and new things for returning customers to discover.”

This year, festivalgoers must buy their tickets in advance online. Tickets are priced at £2.00 per person, but children under the age of two get in for free.

When visitors book their tickets, in order to avoid queues, they will be asked to select a preferred entry time.

Victoria French, Sunderland City Council’s head of events, said, “After seeing Roker Park play host to hundreds of thousands of visitors last year, we wanted to introduce a system that ensures a comfortable experience for everybody attending this year’s Festival of Light.”

“We are sure that being able to choose their preferred time slots will help visitors enjoy it even more.”

More details concerning the Sunderland Illuminations and Festival of Light are set to be released in the next few weeks.
