Every period of history has iconic architectural features. Windows have always been an important part of the home.

Bay windows first became more mainstream in the 19th Century after the 1894 Building Act was amended to say that windows did not have to be flush to the house anymore.

Bay windows are still an attractive feature in a home, but it can be hard to know how to use to properly. Here are some ways you can redesign the space and maximise their use.

Design a reading nook

Bay windows let in so much natural light, so take advantage of this by turning it into a reading nook. You can be practical and have some storage benches that can double as comfy seating. If you have a smaller budget, it can be a doable DIY project.

To keep costs down, source your soft furnishings from charity shops or online auction sites. You might be able to find some real bargains!

Home office designs

Having a nice view whilst you are working can help to make the hours fly by. If you have a bay window upstairs you have the perfect home office space.

Set up a desk in front of the window and work away. Remember to think about your electrical connections. If there isn’t a socket nearby then you may be able to run an extension cable across to your desk.

Eating area

Some kitchens or dining rooms have bay windows and these make stunning eating areas. You can design the space to bring the outside in, so think about adding plants and greenery. Invest in a vertical plant garden and plant some herbs to add a nice scent whilst you are eating.

If you are pressed for space, utilise foldaway furniture so that it can be out of sight when you aren’t using it. You can store it in a cupboard or repurpose it as a workspace during the day. Some foldaway furniture can be hung from a hook which will also keep it out of the way.

Storage solutions

Every household can always use more storage and the space under a bay window can be perfect for adding some extra hidden cupboards. You can opt for some bespoke storage solutions which will really maximise the space you have available.

A padded cushion on top turns this into a nice window seat for reading or gazing out of the window. Alternatively, you could turn it into a haven for your pet with cat scratchers or dog toys and plenty of sunbathing space.

Lighting solutions

Although bay windows let in a lot of light during the day, they will need to be lit in the evenings and at night. Mount some wall sconces in the darkest corners. This will make it a cosy area to read or relax without needing harsh overhead lights on.

You could string some fairy lights around the space to brighten it and create a warm atmosphere. This would be perfect for story time with your children before bed.
