“One Off Brass” is a group of brass instrumentalists comprising members of a number of church denominations including The Salvation Army. They perform a wide ranging repertoire that includes well known classical music, movie and musical themes, and other pieces. During this concert, music to commemorate VE Day will also be featured.
The band are closely linked to Marie Curie and all of their concerts are held to support this very worthwhile charity.
When Stuart Sorrie’s wife, June, died from breast cancer in 2009, he and his children, Gillian and Graeme, felt they should raise funds for MacMillan Nurses and Marie Curie. A “one off” concert was arranged with Stuart’s many friends from the brass band world, both contesting bands and Salvation Army bands. However, following the successful concert the band received invitations to perform others as well as undertaking an annual concert in aid of Marie Curie, the band’s principal benefactor.
The original band comprised players from all parts of England and Wales but currently most players are from the North of England including Tyne and Wear.
As well as its funding raising concerts the band has also undertaken two self-funded tours of Belgium in 2018 and 2022 including playing at the Menin Gate at the evening service which has been an honour for the band.
The band charge no fees and as part of their commitment and stewardship none of the group take any expenses despite all the travelling they undertake to attend rehearsals or an event. All proceeds raised on the evening will go direct to Marie Curie.
