Blue Monday, falling this year on 19 January, is often labelled the most miserable day of the year. But here in Sunderland, we believe it’s the perfect opportunity to try something new, lift your spirits and make happiness your priority.

If you’re feeling the January slump, here are some simple, local and uplifting ways to turn Blue Monday into a Bright Monday:

1. Get Outside and Get Moving

A brisk walk along Roker Beach or Seaburn seafront can do wonders for your mood. The fresh air, sea views and a hot drink from a local café can be just the boost you need. Or explore the peaceful paths of Mowbray Park or Herrington Country Park for a calming escape.

2. Try Something Creative

Creativity is a natural mood booster. Whether it’s sketching, journalling or picking up a new hobby, allow yourself time to enjoy something just for you.

3. Connect Over a Cuppa

Sometimes, a good chat is the best remedy. Meet a friend for coffee, give a loved one a ring or drop in to a local community group.

4. Plan Something to Look Forward To

Having plans, big or small, can brighten your outlook. Book a ticket to a show at The Empire, plan a future day out or set a simple goal like reading a new book or cooking a new recipe this week.

Blue Monday doesn’t have to live up to its name. In Sunderland, there’s joy to be found in the everyday, and even the smallest changes can help you feel more positive. Let’s make 19 January a day to recharge, reconnect and reset for a better year ahead.
