Active Sunderland BIG Walk is returning for 2026, with people of all ages invited to sign up and take part.
This yearβs event will take place at Herrington Country Park on Sunday 27 September, offering a fun, family-friendly day outdoors as well as the chance to take on a walking challenge.
There are four routes available, and walkers can select a walk that suits them, from a gentle, accessible three mile stroll to a challenging hike. Choose between three, six, nine or 13.5 mile routes.
All routes start at 10am from near the amphitheatre and skate park. The longer routes take walkers outside of the park onto footpaths through open countryside and ancient woodland, and along the banks of the River Wear.
Councillor Jonathon Emerson, Cabinet Member for Health, Wellbeing and Adult Services, at Sunderland City Council said:
We're delighted to welcome the BIG Walk back for 2026. It's a fantastic event that encourages people to get active, explore some of Sunderland's beautiful countryside and spend quality time with family and friends.

If you're walking three miles or taking on the full 13.5-mile challenge, every step counts and walking is a great way to improve your health. Walking can help improve fitness, reduce stress, increase energy levels and provide a great opportunity to spend time outdoors with family and friends.
The BIG Walk is open to individuals, families, and groups. Last year saw more than 400 people take part.
Entry prices start from Β£7.50 per person, and everyone who takes part receives a finisher medal.
